Naming – ous vs ic

While naming ionic compounds using IUPAC involving multivalent metal ions the oxidation state or valency of the element is shown in brackets after the name of the metal using roman numerals. Example Iron (II) Sulfate = Fe2SO4, if you name the same compound using trivial naming system or the older naming system the compound is called Ferrous Sulfate.
Multivalent ions when named using the trivial system the metal with lower oxidation system always ends in -ous and the next higher oxidation number will end in -ic.
So Iron (III) Sulfate or Fe2(SO4)3 will be called Ferric Sulfate.
Cu+ = Cuprous ion
Cu2+ = Cupric ion
and so on.

Ionic compounds and shapes

Ionic compounds do not have shape, on the other hand molecular compounds have a definite shape. Ionic compounds have a crystal structure, the inter ionic attraction being electrostatic the force of attraction is directed in space in a three dimensional area, in NaCl each sodium ion is surrounded by six chloride ions and each chloride ion is surrounded by six sodium ions effectively the positive charge is satiated by the negative charges surroundings it. If you look closely you would see that if the positive charge is placed at a point where the three axis intersect the chloride ions would be on either ends of the X, Y and Z axis. This potentially would lead to an FCC type of unit cell, and in each unit cell we would have 4 formula units of NaCl.

The formula of sodium chloride is represented as the simplest ratio in which the positive and negative ions combine to form a neutral molecule. Hence MgO and not Mg2O2. Every ionic compound would belong to one of the 7 crystal systems.
FCC represents face centered cubic unit cell. There are 4 formula units in one unit cell of NaCl, yet the formula is represented as a 1:1 ratio of positive to negative compound.

Mark book 2011 for iPad

Asylum software has come out with an iPad app for its Mark book 2011 software. This app is a free download from the app store until September 30 2011. I did download and install the app. These are some observations I have made and hope it had some useful features.

  • The download and installation was not a problem.
  • The app appears to crash or rather close by itself while trying to navigate.
  • The home screen has the following links – Home, students, Mark set, Entries, Settings, Seating plan, and Web support
  • If you are going to use the iPad only app to record your marks, then it is useful as a device for quick access to your marks.
  • The program allows you to set up a seating plan though not the easiest way to do it, it can be done.
  • The mark set can be set up with categories and appropriate weightings
  • The combined mark report, gives you a quick glance of your students marks summary, marks distribution, modal analysis and seating plan.
  • The settings allows you to manipulate mark ranges, mode ranges, seating plan and student import action.

What the app does not have this is a first impression.

    • Comments, there is no options for comments.
    • There is no way you can export your student mark into any program especially if you are using a program like trillium to transfer your results to the school information system.
    • While importing student list from Mark book installed on your pc it just imports the basic student information, it does not import marks, comments, categories etc. So this is kind of useless.
    • If you are interested in keeping records in two places this app can then be used, so practical utility is not that great, so I doubt a paid mark book app would be worth it.
    • Fixing some of these issues would make this app productive otherwise it is just a fancy piece of app. But it is a good first attempt.

iPad Plus

iPad plus
Is it too soon to release the next version of iPad, is it me or are there more that thinks like that.
I just shelled out 750 + $’s for the iPad 2 only to be told that the next version is getting ready for its launch in the last quarter, or rather the holiday season. Less than 6 months and my device is obsolete. Apparently the new iPad has been added to the production schedule. It may not be called iPad 3 but it is obvious as to why they would have resorted to this naming style. What ever said I still love the device and I am sure the Apple stocks would remain where it should be up there.
These reports appears to be coming from FBR Capital market analyst Craig Berger. Anyways we will wait and watch.

International admissions LOR

Letter of Recommendation:
One of the critical aspects of admissions to international universities is a good letter of recommendation. Students coming from high schools from outside of north America do have difficulties securing admissions due to lack of information regarding the expectations of north American universities. One of the important aspects is to to have an excellent letter of recommendation, merely providing a LOR as another criteria to fulfill admission requirements does not improve your chances of getting admissions. It is quite often noted that the students do have the right prerequisites however it has not been showcased appropriately. Even though this is an underlying fact it has not been recognized by many international student applicants and teachers.

  • First get an an excellent letter of recommendation for an teacher who understands your strengths, for this to happen maintain a good rapport with the teacher you intend to get a LOR.
  • Second tell him of the expectation of the university and the program you are applying to and what aspects of your strengths should be highlighted.
  • Third collect samples of letters of recommendations that may have been successful in the past and show it to your teacher so as to give him an understanding of the written language norms expected in the letter.
  • Fourth all letters of recommendation should be on an official school letter head with appropriate contact information in case the university has to cross check the reference.
  • Fifth give your teacher ample time to write a letter of recommendation – rushing him/her to do so will not be in your favor.
