Notes and definitions
System in equilibrium: A system at equilibrium will have both reactants and products present after the reaction “appears” to stop. The amounts of these substances remain constant, so that no apparent change is observed.
Dynamic Equilibrium: The reversible reaction may have appeared to have stopped, however the reactants continue to change to products and products change back into reactants maintaining the equilibrium. This is referred to as a dynamic equilibrium state.
Catalyst and Equilibrium: A catalyst does not alter the equilibrium constant, however it helps the system attain the equilibrium constant quite quickly, which means that it alters only the rate of a reaction and not the equilibrium constant.
Le Chatlier’s Principle: When a system in equilibrium is subjected to an external constraint (stress) the system readjusts so as to negate the effect of the stress by either increasing the rate of the forward or backward reaction. This information can be used to increase or decrease the amount of products formed in a reaction.
